Tre Sorelle e un cane: a new look – key word Leggerezza!

“Prenderei la leggerezza come un valore, non perché si contrapponga alla pesantezza, ma perché reagisce al peso del vivere.”

“I shall try to show how lightness is not superficiality, but a way of reacting to the weight of living.”– Italo Calvino

Our word for 2026 is Leggerezza. Not lightness as frivolity or carelessness, but rather leggerezza as Calvino meant it: taking things seriously, without making them heavy and keeping things light without making them shallow. Calvino closes his reflection by saying that, as the world grows heavier, leggerezza becomes a value for the future. That perfectly resonates with us at San Donato, so we’ve made it the guiding principle of our work.

From idea to wine(s)

For some time, we had been thinking about a new wine, with a new label to match, that felt fresh, fun, and effortless; something you could open without overthinking it, yet made with the same care and precision that guides everything else we do.

This is where Tre Sorelle e un Cane began. We wanted a project that could reflect the spirit of the new generation of the Fenzi family at San Donato: lighter in approach, fresh in energy, modern, cheerful and, yes, light.

It’s also a little family reunion in a bottle: the three sisters now involved in daily life at the winery, and the dog – or rather dogs – never far behind.

The name is exactly what it says, as well as a small literary joke. We borrowed the rhythm from Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog) by Jerome K. Jerome, a book we love for being very funny without ever trying too hard.

“Let your boat of life be light, packed with only what you need – a homely home and simple pleasures, one or two friends, worth the name, someone to love and someone to love you, a cat, a dog, and a pipe or two, enough to eat and enough to wear, and a little more than enough to drink; for thirst is a dangerous thing.”

– Jeome,K. Jerome

We were lucky to work with Angelica’s friend, a London-based illustrator, who captured our vision perfectly. Sharp, charming, and humorous, he perfectly translated what we had in mind.

(William – Bill for friends even had works published in the New Yorker!!)

The wines

Here’s where care meets lightness. Our wines are serious in how they are made—attentive in the vineyard, precise in the cellar—but relaxed in how they are meant to be enjoyed. Perfect for long evenings with friends, for meals that linger and glasses that keep coming.

Chianti Superiore DOCG

Tre Sorelle e un Cane – featuring Merlot (the dog not the grape!)

Our Chianti Superiore is made primarily from Sangiovese, with a small percentage of other local varieties. The goal? Balance. Structure without weight, character without excess.

“Superiore” here means more care in the vineyard, lower yields, and time devoted to the wine—not more weight in the glass. A classic wine, carried lightly.

Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG

Tre Sorelle e un Cane Bianco – featuring Tino short for Vermentino (in this case both the dog and the grape!)

Tre Sorelle e un Cane Bianco follows the same principle. Vernaccia sits at the centre of the blend, supported by other local varieties that add nuance and aromas. The result is a precise, lively wine, the usual crispness of Vernaccia resulting in something inviting, and effortlessly convivial from the first glass to the last.
